CNN investigation Decoded.
Stuart’s hall’s
encoding and decoding lens is to show us how the producer[encoder] relay his or
her message to the intended audience [decoding]. The video: CNN
investigation sheds new light on anti-brutality protest placed grief in the
heart of many but not all. Using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding lens to
textually break down how the viewers responded either dominant, negotiable or
even oppositional. The CNN reporter made us understand that it was a peaceful protest
with no intended violence attached. This video shows us how young protesters
were on the go for a peaceful protest but destroyed when the police officers
decided to choose violence, firing bullets at innocent people who just wanted
peace. As the video voice over reporter
says, the Nigerian government denies this happened.
The Encoder’s
message [CNN] tells the viewers of the story that the authorities are not
telling, they tend to relay a message of truth and show that they are not
partial, and they are ready to take account of every investigation made. This
video shows full support to the young protesters who were protesting at Lekki
Tollgate on October 20. CNN encoding
message puts a show of sympathy for its viewers to relate with. Not only that,
but also a demand to take responsibility for the incident that happened. The fact
that CNN is a global media house based in Atlanta, there is going to be a kind
of perception given to other countries out there who seems to watch it. A
perception of violence, and disconnection in between people. The Encoder’s
message. All in all, the encoder was telling a story that no one knew if they
did not tell it and will be left with a lie by the Nigerian authorities. So
many proofs shows us that this protest were aimed at the people, you know shots
of the bullet stray and so on. which is one pure act of wickedness. Even when
help was to be offered by people, it was stopped by the Nigerian authority.
Example: when they called for ambulance and it was stopped by the Nigerian
authority. Proof in the video in the time duration of 02:40. So, the message
encoded again is that of inaccuracy and misleading form the Nigerian authority.
To begin with, the
decoding lens of Stuart Hall let us know how different people viewed this
video. There is the dominant decoding lens which are the ones who accept
everything the encoder is trying to pass across. For example, in this video we
have; the local protesters, the supporters of End Sars. This decoding lens
supports the message that the CNN [encoder] is passing across of the inaccuracy
of the leaders, that the protest at first was peaceful from the citizens. It
also supports that CNN really buttress their point of view that the Nigerian
authority were nonchalant about helping the people that put them in power. It
also supports that the narrative of CNN is true compared to the ones said by
the Nigerian and government authorities. In this dominant decoding lens, there
is truth and that is what they believe. It is surely for a fact that CNN is an
ally in the fight for Justice for the people who were just seeking peace and
their voice to be heard, which is just like a cry for help. There is no rejection
in this decoding lens, because they see it as truth and empowerment for them. Also,
from a clip in the video, the dominant viewers would say that yes it was a
peaceful video, for instance, Godson who was one of the protesters was happy
and dancing while doing a protest. It shows for a fact that it was peaceful.
Another decoding
lens we would review is the Negotiated decoding lens, relating to the video.
These viewers agree to what the encoder is saying but to an extent they
question the encoder, and which makes them in the middle, they accept, and they
don’t accept, they are in the middle. So, a negotiated viewer see this video
and say ‘this is one sided, why are they only talking about the people’s voice
what about the others, which include the authorities or the police themselves.
It may be a true story, but it is not the full story. This decoding lens says
that “I get that people were injured and all, it is such a great loss for those
who lost them, but why does the Encoder [CNN] have to show the dead bodies to
emphasize on sympathy of getting the weak point of individuals, making them to
be against the authorities. Also, are
these truly all, there is more to it to buttress the point on the “this is just
an angle of the story”. People who are
likely to think this way are the people who watch from outside [the international
viewers] and so on. Therefore, the negotiated decoding lens is not against but
not accepting the actions taken by CNN, at this point they are on the middle
ground.
Lastly, the last
decoding lens of Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding lens is the oppositional
decoding lens. These viewers are against all the Encoder has passed across. For
example: the people in this video who are likely to be fully against CNN, are the
government/ Nigerian authorities, those who fall into power basically. So, why
are they rejecting the encoder’s message. The reason is because everything is a
lie and total disruption to whatever they have built. This decoding lens
believes that CNN is biased and are up to just attack Nigerian’s image. They
are likely to say that the videos that are gotten, or images are not true, it
is just a way to pull people to believe them. This oppositional decoding lens
rejects the encoders message and never accept anything the message is passing
across, even if there be any truth in it.
In conclusion,
Using Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding lens is very crucial, so that as a
viewer you would understand how decode an information passed across to
you. Using this lens to analyze this
video, there is an understanding that meaning is not fixed, it is created by
the perspective of different opinions put in place. Note: Every side of a story
is someone’s perspective. You either being a viewer in every of these decoding
lenses, it means that this is your perspective, and you believe it and can argue
it to end. Therefore, using these lenses has made analyzing the encoders
message in three easy ways; dominant, negotiable and oppositional.
